Bias Profiling

It will be the policy of the Wise County Sheriff's Office not to condemn any citizen contacts based solely on race and address any violation of this policy with appropriate employees.

DEFINITIONS

BIAS BASED PROFILING: Bias based profiling means law enforcement initiated action based on an individual's race, ethnicity, or national origin rather than on the individual's behavior or on information identifying the individual as having engaged in criminal activity.

RACE OR ETHNICITY: Race or ethnicity means a particular descent, including Caucasian, African, Hispanic, Asian, or Native American descent.

PEDESTRIAN STOP: Pedestrian Stop means an interaction between a peace officer and an individual who is being detained for the purpose of a criminal investigation in which the individual is not under arrest.

ACTS OF BIAS BASED PROFILING: Acts of bias based profiling include traffic and pedestrian stops based on an individual's race or ethnicity rather than the individual's actions or based upon reasonable suspicion.

PROHIBITION OF BIAS BASED PROFILING

All peace officers employed by the Wise County Sheriff's Office are strictly prohibited from engaging in bias based profiling.
