John L. Cearley
November 4, 1902, to
November 6, 1906
John L. Cearley was born in 1860 in Hardemen County, Tennessee, to John W. and
Milly Booth Cearley. In 1869, his family moved west to Denton County, Texas. Eight years
later, John W. Cearley bought land near the west fork of the Trinity River, just west of
Village Creek. Today this land would be in the middle of Lake Bridgeport.
At age 26, Cearley was elected constable for precinct 7, a position he held for
ten years, while he farmed. In 1888, he married Effie Dickinson. They had three daughters.
On November 4, 1902, he was elected to his first term of office, serving until
December 31, 1905. After serving in public office, Cearley went back to his farm. He died
in 1925 and is buried in the Chico Cemetery.
