Ray "Sage" Nobles
January
7, 1947, to December 31, 1950
Ray "Sage" Nobles was elected on November 5, 1946. He took office on
January 7, 1947. He was re-elected on November 3, 1948, and served until December 31,
1950.
During his second term of administration as sheriff, Wise County experienced one
of its most horrendous double homicides.
On August 23, 1949, W.I. (Ike) Arwine entered a home located seven miles
southwest of Bridgeport and shot Oma Mash. He left the residence and encountered Jessie
Mash in the field just south of the house. He shot Mr. Mash in the neck and in the right
shoulder.
It was reported that his fit of rage stemmed from the charges that Mrs. Mash had
filed against him earlier in the month. Mrs. Mash had accused Ike Arwine of rape. At the
time of the murder, Ike Arwine was out of jail on a $1,000.00 bond.
