                      R. E. A. C. H. PROGRAM

It is the belief of the Wise County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff David Walker, that when it comes to the ever-increasing rate of juvenile crime, early intervention is the first step to prevention. To this Sheriff Walker would like to inform you about the R. E .A.  C. H Program.

         Reaching, Encouraging, Actions, Choices, Hope

The program is designed to provide a direct and in depth dialogue between at-risk juvenile participants, law enforcement personnel, juvenile probation personnel, Child Protective Services representatives and inmates from the Wise County Jail. This program is basically for those juveniles who have not yet broken the law. The program is a three hour program.

Step-one covers how a juvenile’s behavior can affect the choices they make. There will be open discussion with School Resource Officer, Paige DoByns and Crime Prevention Officer, Sgt Debbie Denney. This will include such topics as peer pressure and decision-making.

Step-two provides information about what to expect if placed  in a juvenile detention center or given a term of probation, Juvenile Probation Officers, Kristi McQuistion and Cash Jetton, will speak with juveniles.

Step-three starts with a tour of the jail, participants will  meet incarcerated inmates, who will give a first hand account of “ Prison Life ” and events that led to their  incarceration.

Step-four of the program will vary from showing a video to giving the juveniles the opportunity to visit with various guest speakers and ending with a question and  answer session.

Participation in the REACH program is voluntary and open to anyone between the ages of 10-17. Juveniles may be placed in the program by a parent, teacher, school counselor, or any law enforcement official and court-ordered by a Judge that feels the child would benefit.

The REACH program will be held at the Wise County Sheriff’s Department located at 200 Rook Ramsey Drive, Decatur Texas, 76234. The program is scheduled to be every third Monday of the month with times for the program set from 6pm-9pm. A parent or guardian must accompany the juvenile participants.
