The Wise County Sheriff's Department Reserve Unit was formed to assist the Sheriff's Department in meeting the needs of the county. Volunteers from many walks of life give their time to their community by serving as Reserve Deputies.

Reserve Deputies assist the Department in a number of ways:

bulletAct as patrol officers in both one and two-man patrol units.
bulletTransport prisoners to and from other jurisdictions.
bulletServe civil papers.
bulletServe criminal warrants.
bulletAssist with special events.
bulletServe in other areas as needed by the Department.

Reserves also provide the extra manpower required during special circumstances such as searches for lost or missing persons, manhunts, evacuations, and other emergencies. Reserves are required to work a minimum of 16 hours per month (or 48 hours each quarter) and attend any staff meetings.

What are the qualifications?

Reserve Deputies must meet the same standards as full-time peace officers, as they hold the same authority. Applicants must complete the same hiring process as a full-time officer.

Are there costs involved?

Reserves must provide their own weapon, leather gear, uniform shirt and pants. Applicants must also pay for their psychological exam (if required), physical, and drug screen.

How do I apply?

Applications are available at the Sheriff's Department and can be picked up at any time during business hours (Monday through Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm) Applicants can also contact Reserve Captain Jerry McGee . You may also download an application.

What steps are involved in the application process?

The first step is for the applicant to complete the initial application form. After this, the applicant will be subject to a criminal history and background check. If the results of the background check are positive, then the applicant will be interviewed. After successful completion of the interview, the applicant will complete a physical, drug screen, and psychological exam (if required) at his or her expense.

Is it worth all of that effort?

The Wise County Sheriff's Department is looking for those who wish to serve their community in a special way. It requires diligence and commitment, but the reward of knowing you are contributing to a safer and better community make it worth the effort.
